Águas do Norte (ADN) is a large company which manages the multi-municipal system responsible for the collection, treatment and supply of water intended for public consumption and for the collection, treatment and disposal of domestic, urban and industrial effluents.
The exploration and management of these systems includes the design, construction, extension, conservation, repair, renovation, maintenance and improvement of the infrastructures and the acquisition of the equipment and facilities necessary for the development of the activities.
ADN has a coverage area of 66 municipalities in the North of Portugal, serves 3.7 million inhabitants across a territorial region accounting for 22% of Portugal, and integrates the following infrastructures: 29 WTP, 2258 km of water pipelines and 372 water reservoirs, 189 WWTP, 1616 km of sewage drainage systems and 368 sewage pumping stations.
Águas do Norte will provide samples and operational data from its anaerobic digesters on treatment efficiencies, digestate quality and methane productivity. A sludge digester and a co-digestion digester will be studied by means of metagenomic / metatranscriptomic analyzes, aiming to link the identity and microbial function to the efficiency of bioprocessing.
